Iraq Deadlines

Democrats in Congress have declared their insistence on setting up artificial deadlines for troop withdrawal from Iraq, and Bush has declared his insistence on vetoing any legislation that contains a deadline. Needless to say, Democrats are trying to spin this to Bush's disadvantage, but it very well may be that it's not working. I firmly believe that the Democrats are working so hard to make sure to give Bush a budget bill he will not pass because they do not want to explicitly stop funding for the war, but will do so by virtue of giving them no money.

However, I would like to submit this idea: the House of Representatives have said they wanted all combat troops to leave by September (just in time for the next election, where they would declare victory over Bush); but I feel that our term over there is coming due anyway. Iraq is taking control of itself more and more. Despite what Democrats claim, no one wants us to be in Iraq indefinitely. We've been there for a very long time and we've made awesome strides in the country. In stark contrast to the rhetoric, we have succeeded at our mission to depose Saddam and install a Democratic government. And I truly believe that our time is limited. Whether it be from my perception or it be political pressure from Bush, I don't think we'll stay in Iraq after 2008.
