Welsh becomes official language in EU

Welsh language makes EU debut - Yahoo! News

This is probably one of the most interesting articles I've seen in a long time. A language spoken by some 750,000 people worldwide and 611,000 people in Wales, of which less than 70% speak daily, is considered by the EU a language worthy enough in which to have official correspondence written and in and from which speeches may be interpreted. It joins 22 other languages which enjoy official status within the European Union.

On a roll

Two posts in (approximately) as many minutes. It's a glut!

Now if only I can get in the habit.

But now, to discuss this: California court urged to review gay marriage ban - Yahoo! News

I'm somewhat ambivalent on the gay marriage thing. As long as they don't try to force churches to marry gay couples against their will, I'm not sure if I really care.

What I do care about is this concept that the will of the people can be determined by a court.

In this particular case, opponents of California Proposition 8, a state-constitutional amendment that allows for marriage only between a man and a woman, now claim that voters do not have the authority to vote on such an amendment. They claim that they needed to "revise" the constitution, whatever that means.

It's an amendment passed by the voters. Of that, there is no question. Maybe if someone were to actually explain what this "revision" thing is all about, I might understand a little more about it, but as it is now it makes no sense.

Defamation lawsuit against Murtha

House member argues for immunity from lawsuit - Yahoo! News

I've been very interested to know how this whole thing has been going, and I'm glad I finally got a chance to see something going on about this.

It seems that currently at question is the idea that a congressman can be sued for defamation, considering that he has constitutional protection for his job. The original court ordered that Murtha should give a deposition, but he appealed that based on those grounds. This judge seems to be just as skeptical about the argument, wondering if he would be protected no matter what he said about the war.

Chances are, this is going to go all the way to the Supreme Court and they're going to have to make a decision about how far congressional protection goes.

Weeping and gnashing of teeth

That's what it looks like on my forum right now. It's kinda funny. I know it's mean.

Maybe I'm a bit jaded as to the possible effects of an Obama administration, but I don't think he's going to do much. But then again, I got some people on my forum saying that his administration is going to fundamentally and irrevocably destroy this country. I'm sorry, but with all this country's been through, we're going to stick around a little longer. Obama has no intentions to rip apart this Constitution. He may read a bunch of crap into it, but he's not going to destroy it.
